Conquering Bladder Leak

Urine incontinence treatment options for women: Explore this guide to understanding causes, symptoms, & effective treatments.

Urine Incontinence Treatment is often ignored by women who are barely able to control their leakage. They only seek solutions when the symptoms become more severe.

The urethra is the thin pipe like structure through which a woman empties her urinary bladder. Due to multiple factors like, heavy stress during vaginal childbirth, aging or hormonal imbalances, the muscles and ligaments involved in completely and firmly closing the urethra weaken. This leads to unnational leakage of urine during normal activities like exercise, laughing or sneezing.

Stress incontinence means the leakage of urine with everyday activities such as coughing, sneezing or exercise. It is a very common problem that affects 1 in 3 women globally. Stress incontinence may be improved with pelvic floor exercise and lifestyle modifications, but if these strategies fail then surgery may be recommended for you to continue to have a healthy and confident lifestyle.

What is the need for Urine Incontinence Treatment ?

Many women mistakenly believe that urinary incontinence is a normal part of aging or an inevitable consequence of childbirth. However, it’s important to understand that incontinence is treatable in most cases. Seeking treatment is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Improved Quality of Life: Effective treatment can significantly enhance daily activities and social interactions.
  2. Prevention of Complications: Untreated incontinence can lead to skin irritations, infections, and falls (especially in older women rushing to the bathroom).
  3. Emotional Well-being: Addressing incontinence can alleviate anxiety, depression, and social isolation.
  4. Better Sleep: Treatment can reduce nighttime urination, improving sleep quality.
  5. Enhanced Sexual Health: Managing incontinence can improve intimate relationships and sexual satisfaction.
  6. Increased Physical Activity: With proper treatment, women can engage in exercise and sports without fear of leakage.
  7. Professional Performance: Addressing incontinence can improve concentration and reduce workplace disruptions.
  8. Cost-effectiveness: While treatment may have upfront costs, it can save money in the long run by reducing expenses related to pads and laundry.

NON INVASIVE TREATMENT FOR URINE INCONTINENCE

Electromagnetic Pulses

This is one of most effective non invasive treatment options for Urine Incontinence. Elle Sante offers the cutting edge innovative technology, which is a breakthrough treatment for incontinence.

It is as simple as “RELAXING IN A CHAIR”.  During this treatment, the patient is fully clothed and comfortable. She is made to sit in a chair which has built-in magnetic applicators. The applicators release magnetic waves directly into the patient pelvic region, this providing high intentisity mulscle contrations to the entire oelvic floor area. This technique lead to improved muscle strength, and the patient is able to control the urine flow much better after the sessions.

This is a completely non invasive technique using electromagnetic energy waves to cause deep and intense pelvic floor muscle contractions. The waves stimulate the entire pelvic floor area and helps restore neuromuscular control. A single session causes thousands of pelvic floor muscular contractions, which are critical in drastic improvement of urine incontinence, by strengthening, toning and firming of the plevic floor muscles.

This treatment has shown Clinically Significant Results in the Treatment of Urine Incontinence (Involuntary Urine Leak), Faecal Incontinence (Involuntary Faecal Leak), Portpartum rehabilitation (strengthening of pelvic muscles after deilvery) and Post Surgery reabilitation in women

The procedure feels like “Induced Kegel Excercises”. The patient can feel the results  from the very first session .

MINIMAL INVASIVE TREATMENTS FOR URINE INCONTINENCE

Laser Treatment for Urine Incontinence

Elle Sante uses the state of the art Laser Treatment for non invasive, painless and quick recovery from urine incontinence. The laser devices use gentle, comfortable laser pulses delivered to the tissues across the vaginal canal, through a smooth probe.

The treatment works by stimulating the body’s own regenerative power. Laser pulses are delivered to the tissue using a probe in optimal modes. The probe gives a mild heating effect to the surrounding tissue, hence triggers production of new collagen. The tissue is effectively strengthened to provide pelvic support, further minimizing involuntary leakage of urine during physical activities, coughing or sneezing.

For the majority of cases, a few sessions as prescribed by a skilled reconstructive and cosmetic gynaecologist,  are sufficient to alleviate mild or even moderate stress urinary incontinence. There is no need for any special prepations pre procedure or precautions post procedure. The patient returns to normal active life almost immediately after the procedure. The procedure is incisionless and virtually painless. The patient recovery is very quick and does not need supportive antibiotics or analgesics.

The results are long lasting (usually more than a year) without the need of constant creams or gels. Only a few quick sessions are enough to achieve high quality results.

The patient returns back to normal life immediately after the treatment. The practically painless procedure does not need any medication like antibiotics.

Radiofrequency Treatment for Urine Incontinence

Radiofrequency is yet another method to significantly improve intimate wellness.
Elle Sante offers the most contemporary advancement in the field of radiofrequency technology for improving Urine Incontinence.
During this procedure, the patient comfortably lies in examination position, and is draped. A radiofrequency probe uses heat to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the vaginal area, which can result in increased blood flow, improved sensation, and enhanced vaginal tightness.

The treatment can be used to address a range of concerns, including vaginal laxity, itchy & dry vagina, and urinary incontinence.

SURGICAL TREATMENTS FOR URINE INCONTINENCE

1. Sling Surgery for Urine Incontinence Treatment

Sling surgery, as the name suggests, implies that a supportive sling (or a synthetic mesh) is placed under the urethra and on the pubic bone. This is done with the help of fine needles which are inserted with small incisions in the groin area. The incisions are then sealed using skin glue or a stitch for quick healing and recovery.

The Sling provides long lasting support to the urethra, and prevents unintentional opening and leaking due to stress-like cough, jumping or laughing. The surgical intervention is minimally invasive, does not have a long recovery time. It is known to provide women with enough bladder control and relieve them from the consistent symptoms of urine incontinence.

Patients are usually able to return to normal lifestyle and activities within 5-7 days. They must avoid heavy lifting and sexual activity for approximately 2 weeks.

Sling surgery aims at treating Incontinence, are three types of Sling Surgeries:

  1. TVT (Tension Free Transvaginal Tape)

During this procedure, a small surgical incision is made inside the vagina and two small surgical incisions are main on the lower belly area just above the pubic hair line. A small sling (or surgical mesh) is passed through the vagina and placed under the urethra. The two ends of the mesh are then pulled and adjusted through the other two incisions.

After the tension (or tightness) of the sling is adjusted, the incisions are sealed using stitches or skin glue. With the healing process, there is formation of scar tissue which holds the sling in place and provides enough support to the urethra.

  1. TOT (Trans obturator Tape)

During this procedure, the surgeon will make two small incisions in your groin and one small incision in the vagina. A small sling (or surgical mesh) is passed through the vagina and placed under the urethra. The two ends of the mesh are then pulled and adjusted through the other two incisions. While the procedure may sound overwhelming, the procedure is well studied and has proven results. A skilled reconstructive & cosmetic gynaecologist will be able to deliver a safe treatment through this process.

After the tension (or tightness) of the sling is adjusted, the incisions are sealed using stitches or skin glue. With the healing process, there is formation of scar tissue which holds the sling in place and provides enough support to the urethra.

iii. Mini Sling Surgery

Mini Sling treatments is the latest innovation in the surgical treatment options for urine incontinence, which is the least invasive of the three methods. Technically this procedure is similar to the TOT/TVT procedures, the only difference being a Single Incision is used bya skilled gynaecologist surgeon to place the sling for support to the urethra. A sling (or synthetic mesh) is placed firmly behind the urethra and its tightness is adjusted. In a way, this procedure is one notch better that other surgical interventions in terms of recovery time due to the minimization of number of incisions.

2. Burch Colposuspension for Urine Incontinence Treatment

As the name suggests, this treatment for Stress Urine Incontinence, enables suspending the urethra ( urinary canal) neck from the surrounding pelvic tissues for additional support. This procedure restores supports to the bladder neck and prevents the hypermobility of the urethra.

This is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed laparoscopically. The highly skilled surgeon makes small incisions along the bikini line to secures the bladder neck to a ligament behind the pubic bone.

The surgery involves a few absorbable stitches and has a slightly longer recovery time (~4-5 weeks). Given the excellent long term outcomes of this treatment, this procedure is highly recommended as a important surgical procedure to alleviate Stress Urine Incontinence.

What are the risks of Surgical Treatments for Urine Incontinence?

Any surgical intervention brings risks to the patient.  The surgical treatments for urine incontinence can have the following risk – Bleeding, Infection, injury to nearby organs or the organ being treated, fistula, pain, reaction to the slings / synthetic mesh.
It is therefore, imperative to seek treatment from a skilled and experienced reconstructive & cosmetic gynaecologist who focuses on women pelvic area conditions.

How do I chose my Doctor for Treatment for Urine Incontinence?

You should “self evaluate” the severity of your issue and understand the impact this is causing on your day-to-day life.
It is of utmost importance, to discuss all risks with a skilled reconstructive & cosmetic gynaecologist before taking a decision on any treatment.  Also, it becomes almost imperative to chose your healthcare provider AND healthcare facility.

  • The surgeon should be highly skilled and experienced (specialized) in the area of reconstructive and cosmetic gynaecology.
  • The surgeon must be adequately supported with a specialized trained team to facilitate seamless procedures.
  • The healthcare facility (hospital or clinic) must offer a range of treatment options, so as to chose the right path for the patient. They should not force one treatment option on all patients.
  • The hospital / clinic must follow all infection control protocols and must be visibly hygienic, airy and well ventilated. It may be a good practice to check out the facility of the procedure before taking a decision.
  • Last but no the least, your doctor should be accessible and compassionate towards your needs and fears. He/She must be able to dedicate personalized consultation time pre and post-surgery to enable trust and healthy recovery.
  • Explore all possible outcomes from suggested treatments and evaluate the budget involved in achieving the best possible outcome you desire.
  • Please discuss all your overall health concerns and any medical history with your doctors to be able to understand your tolerance of recovery time and procedure involved.
